Buxton Tennis Club is part of the Buxton Cricket, Bowls and Tennis club and the site on Park Road was first established by the Cricket Club in 1853. Major tennis tournaments were held in Buxton from 1883 and it was the venue for the All-England Ladies Doubles Tennis Championships! The competition continued under that name until 1951, at which point it transferred to a club in a suburb of West London.

The 3 all-weather courts are set in a beautiful location alongside the cricket ground and bowling green with open views to the south-East, and are within easy walking distance of Buxton Town Centre. The club offers the opportunity to take part in social play, with open sessions on Saturday mornings and Monday evenings (we play ALL YEAR, unless rain or snow are actually falling) and competitive play in the Sheffield and District leagues, as well as just playing when you feel like it.

New for 2012-13

Coaching
Matt Slimming of Champion Coaching Buxton is taking coaching sessions for juniors for us this year. Matt is a level 2 LTA qualified coach with many years' involvement with youth sport, and will be delivering a structured series of sessions following the LTA mini-tennis and junior tennis schemes. Junior membership of the club includes five free sessions from this series--contact Matt at matt.championcoaching@gmail.com or 07939 222 440 for further details of what he is doing--he has a very rich set of plans, leading eventually to success in the main Wimbledon singles finals! The junior coaching sessions are planned for late afternoon/early evening on weekdays, initially from 4:00-5:00pm, but expanding to 5:00-6:00pm if necessary, and are planned using the LTA coaching stages. Matt is also keen to provide coaching for less experienced adult players--contact him as above if you're interested.

Tournaments
Last year we ran a very popular series of informal tournaments on the first Sunday in the month. These are an extra opportunity to play outside your normal tight group in a friendly atmosphere--people turn up on Sunday morning, we try to select reasonably evenly matched pairs, and then we play using a handicapping system where each time you win a game you start a point down (so if you're 3-0 up then you start at -40:love in the next game, which means that most matches end up either 2-2 or 3-1). No prizes, no pressure, just an entertaining morning's tennis. Next one is 1st June--I'll send round a reminder nearer the time. With any luck the weather will actually be something like summer by then, and maybe we'll be able to attach a picnic lunch to it at the end.

Monday evening club play
To make it easier to see who is coming on Monday evenings, I've set up a link where you can let other people know if you're intending to come. The hope is that if people can see who is coming then they will be more likely to turn up themselves, so that we can get the Monday evening session going. Click here to say that you are coming down on Monday.

Finding new people to play
A number of people have said that they would like to find new people to play. If you'd like to make contact with other people who are looking for new partners, click here to add your details and find other people in the same situation.
